Welcome to Mundane Wisdom

I find the mundane fascinating. It makes the seemingly unreachable within reach. We are connected by these routine, everyday experiences, even when we feel alone.

Looking at the sky.

Checking the date.

Checking the time.

Tying our shoes.

When I was little, I loved when TV shows would show the time or the date because it meant I shared something with the characters’ lives. Two of my all-time favorite shows took different approaches to this. The Golden Girls rarely used real dates or times. The calendar hanging on the kitchen door didn’t have a month. I suppose it kept the reality of the sitcom more timeless. I Love Lucy used real dates. The calendar in the Ricardos’ kitchen had a month with dates circled. Sometimes you’ll even catch Lucy looking at her watch to tell Ethel what time it is.

I’m also a huge fan of David Bowie. I was lucky enough to see him on one of his last tours. In the middle of his performance of “Fashion,” Bowie looked down to see that his shoe was untied. He stopped, mid-performance while the band carried on, to tie his shoe. I turned to my friend, Ryan, “DUDE! Bowie ties his shoes! Just like I do! We tie my shoes! We all have so much in common!”

And there it was. David Bowie, the Goblin King, an artist who I would name my dog after decades later, was doing the most mundane activity during one of the most unmandane things ever: being a rock star.

This is the spirit of Mundane Wisdom, a collection of musings, reflections, and thoughts on bringing the seemingly elusive world of spirituality and transformation into our everyday lived experience. Sometimes it’s the most everyday objects and experiences that hold profound insight. We just need to take the time to see what life is offering us in the mundane.

As a spiritual director, educator, and founder of Lumin Living, I accompany people through all of life’s transitions. Navigating career shifts, discerning relationship changes, figuring out how to live in a world that feels impossible — nothing is off limits when we’re trying to learn how to be a light in the world. I, too, experience these challenges, and writing helps me make sense of everything stirring about in my mind and soul.

So, welcome to Mundane Wisdom. Let’s see where this journey takes us.
